A bone marrow transplant also known as a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), is the replacement of bone marrow that is no longer able to produce enough healthy red blood cells. In a bone marrow transplant, healthy, blood-forming stem cells are transplanted into the body. You will need a bone marrow transplant if your bone marrow is no longer able to produce enough healthy red blood cells or if it fails completely.
The terms “stem cell transplant” and “bone marrow transplant” are often used interchangeably, which can be confusing. The two terms describe the same treatment.
